Ronnie Perkins
Pos: EDGE
School: Oklahoma
Ht. 6’3
Wt. 247
Strengths:
Ronnie Perkins is a junior out of Oklahoma. Perkins is a speed rusher who provided the Sooners defense with a spark and with dynamic ability. The first thing that pops off the screen when watching Perkins is his ability to use his hands to his benefit. Against Florida, his hand usage helped him win many battles off of the snap. Furthermore, Perkins shows an extremely explosive get off, and his ultra aggressive as soon he gets in contact with the tackle he is lined up against. He is a high motor player who is guaranteed to give you his all on each and every snap. In terms of his rush arsenal, Perkins lives off of clubbing and using is hands to work thru the offensive tackle. He is a bendy rusher with good ankle flexion, and he manages to work well off of that too. Perkins is listed at 247 pounds, but he plays much bigger than that size and I like the way he is able to use his weight to his benefit.
Weaknesses:
While Perkins does have a few elite pass rush moves in his arsenal, he must add more countermoves apart from his tug and pull, and rip/swim moves. If the offensive tackle has a plan to stop Perkins rush by stopping his hand movements and taking his bending motion out of the play, Perkins may lack a feasible countermove to get back into the play. In short, he must diversify his rush plan and add to it, as good coaching in the NFL may lead to. Furthermore, in the run game Perkins still needs to develop. He is an extremely athletic and quick pass rusher, however he needs to learn how to attack the run game with discipline. Often times he is bailed out by his athletic ability but improving his technique in that area would help him in many ways. While he is able to use his weight well, adding 5-10 pounds to his frame would go miles in helping him develop a bull rush and other rush moves to attack stronger offensive lineman.
Overall Assessment: Ronnie Perkins is an extremely aggressive, athletic and explosive athlete who will be a versatile pass rusher at the next level. He has some intangible traits that make him a unique prospect, and uses his hands in a way which I haven’t seen many pass rushers out of college display. More often than not, Perkins gets away with his bendiness, and his hand movements, however this will likely not translate to the NFL. Therefore, it is important that Perkins develops a more diverse rush arsenal. He will also have to improve in the run game in terms of his technique, but I don’t see this being an issue. Perkins has versatility considering his weight and aggressiveness. He won’t be an every down, hands in the dirt type player in a 4-3 scheme, due to his weight, however I can see this being a real possibility if he adds some pounds to his frame. As of now, I project him to be a LEO type pass rusher, who can sprint off the edge in a 4-3 scheme. However he can also be a 3-4 outside linebacker, and drop back in coverage. Perkins hauled in a one handed interception at his Pro Day workout recently when teams asked him to drop back into coverage. Perkins played tight end in high school and can certainly utilize these skills at the next level.
