Mac Jones

Pos: QB

School: Alabama

Ht. 6’2″

Wt. 217 lbs

Strengths:

Mac Jones is a well built quarterback for the Crimson Tide. Jones started 1 and a half years and put on a show while he was playing. Jones is a well functioning quarterback who has good throwing mechanics and footwork to tag along with proper technique. Considering his minimal starting time, his mechanics are quite noteworthy and will really boost his value to an NFL team. When it comes to arm talent, Mac Jones does the job and at an above average level. His deep ball gets the job done, and Jones is usually able to get the ball to his receiver when throwing 30 and 40+ yards downfield. Jones’ best trait however, is his accuracy. Jones displays pinpoint accuracy on most of his snaps. As a result he is very safe with the football, is a a guy any OC can trust.

Weaknesses:

Jones has a number of weaknesses. The first and most apparent being, his athletic ability, or lack thereof. While many scouts and analysts accuse Jones of being completely immobile, I don’t believe this is true. He could definitely use some improvement when the play breaks down and he has to escape the pocket and work with his legs. I feel like he CAN do this when needed, but he just doesn’t do enough of it, which is something I would like to see him do at the higher level. While Jones’ deep ball isn’t bad, it gets the job done and nothing much else. His arm talent isn’t off the charts like Zach Wilson or Trevor Lawrence. Jones’ career has been boosted by playing with an elite offensive line, 4 first round receivers, and a first round running back. In essence, his game has certainly been elevated by these outstanding talents.

Overall Assessment: There is a lot an NFL GM would love about Mac Jones. He is a quarterback that is safe with the football, can make just about any throw on the field, and is able to do so at a highly efficient level. The question really isn’t about what he can do with his arm but more of what he can do with his legs when he isn’t playing behind an elite offensive line. Furthermore, how will Jones play on a team that doesn’t have the best receivers in the entire nation? Nonetheless, Jones film proves that at worst, he will be a game managing quarterback who is smart and can make the right throws when needed. However, I see Jones exceeding this benchmark, if he is placed in the right scheme with a good OC and Head Coach.
