Justin Fields
Pos: QB
School: Ohio State
Ht. 6’3
Wt. 227
Strengths:
Fields is among the top quarterbacks in this years class. He has two years of starting under his belt, and is an elite prospect. In terms of tangible traits, Fields brings almost everything to the table. Extreme athleticism, good arm strength, and good accuracy, are all part of Fields’ repertoire. Fields is one of the best runners at the QB position in this years draft, and is ultra aggressive when making plays as a ball carrier. Fields is a tough football player, who plays thru injuries, as he did against Clemson in this years College Football Playoffs. He is a dynamic player who can get the job done using his legs and his strong arm. Fields has all the tangible tools needed to be a superstar QB in the NFL.
Weaknesses:
While Fields may have the arm, the speed and the athleticism, there are some areas in which he must develop. First and foremost, is his football IQ. Fields struggles when he is forced to move past his first read and scan the field, as this process takes too long for him to do, and ends up in him being sacked. This is another issue for Fields. He lacks the mental clock that QB’s in the NFL must have in order to succeed. Taking too much time on progressions results in Fields being sacked and making him more vulnerable to injuries. Fields has a major consistency issue as well. Against teams like Northwestern, Indiana, Clemson in 2020, Fields struggled miserably in places where he normally thrives. His accuracy took a massive dip, and his football IQ issues were on full display. A large portion of his success came against weaker teams in the Big 10.
Overall Assessment: I am not as big of a fan of Justin Fields as others are, however I do see him being a top 5 pick in this years draft. He is neck and neck with Trey Lance in my opinion. Fields has almost all the tools needed to succeed however, some of his weaknesses can only be corrected by himself, and it hasn’t happened yet. If he can manage to work on his ability to make the right pre snap reads, and progressions once he has the ball in his hands, Fields will be able to showcase all of his skills at a high level. Fields has shown improvement, and I was impressed by his performance in the 2020-21 College Football Playoff, but I am not completely sold on him being above Trey Lance just yet.
