Strengths:
- Shows great instincts and a nose for the football when seeking out the ball carrier from the backside of plays.
- establishes contact on pulling guards when on the play side of a power concept at a near elite level.
- Coverage ability is solid in zone and man and he possesses good speed to cover tight ends and running backs.
- Does a great job reading zone running schemes on the front side and attacking the ball carrier in the hole.
- Consistent tackler.
- In coverage, he does a good job of diagnosing and attacking checkdowns.
- Adds value as a QB spy.
- Blitzes well but he could add a few pass rush moves to help himself out.
Weaknesses:
- Has the tendency to overplay the run on the backside.
- Struggles with block shedding on occasion.
- Plays a little high.
- On occasion he looks uncomfortable in his backpedal.
- Occasionally takes poor angles when tracking down the ball carrier in open space.
Overall Assessment: Jamin Davis has explosiveness, speed, and length that will lead to him being a successful linebacker at the next level. He possesses good understanding of most run concepts and he knows how to attack pullers and meet ballcarriers in the gap they want to take in zone whether he is playing on the back or front side. That being said, Davis tends to over play the run a lot which greatly limits his effectiveness against play action and RPO/RO concepts. This is also an issue in the run game when he is manning the backside as he gets quite a distance out of position consistently. He does a great job of ducking blocks to make tackles and has a nose for the ball. All in all, Davis’s best role is probably as a backup out of the gate as he needs some coaching and film study to fix some of his bigger flaws.
