Kellen Mond
Pos: QB
School: Texas A&M
Ht. 6’3
Wt. 217 lbs
Strengths:
- Great athlete who can maneuver in and outside of the pocket. Able to make difficult throws on the run
- Strong runner who can take off when needed and pickup yardage.
- Can make simply outstanding throws that would be considered great even in the NFL.
- More often than not, the ball placement is on point.
- Has become more safe with the football through his years in college, and has a high value for taking care of the football and making smart throws.
Weaknesses:
- Suspect to holding on to reads for too long in some instances and locking in to one read.
- Consistency is large issue with Mond. Sometimes he makes jaw dropping throws, and the next play he may make a head scratching throw and complete misplace the ball. Volatile player.
- Hasn’t put up big time touchdown numbers in any of his seasons.
- Has some distinctive issues with his throwing technique, with his elbows up too high, hindering a proper throwing motion. Hasn’t truly affected him yet, but it is something an NFL coach would definitely want to work upon.
Overall Assessment: Kellen Mond is a polarizing prospect out of Texas A&M who has 4 years of experience under his belt. Mond is a great athlete who can get the job done on the ground and through the air. He is able to make some difficult and challenging throws when moving on the run. Furthermore, when standing still in the pocket, Mond has the ability to throw some fabulous deep balls that would be considered exceptional throws at the NFL level. He has OK ball placement and is able to deliver the ball to his receivers at a somewhat high and efficient rate. It is clear that Mond has developed since his freshman year at A&M, with his interceptions total taking a dip. However, Mond is far from a finished prospect. He has to fix his tendency to lock on to one read, and instead evaluate the entire field in front of him. This is an issue that I see from time to time during Kellen’s tape. Furthermore, Mond has to improve upon being more consistent, and less of a streaky player. Mond may play spectacular on one drive and may completely whiff on the next. This affects his ball placement too, as he botches throws at times misplacing entirely. This began to decrease as he spent more time learning and adjusting however Mond has room to improve in this area once he’s a pro. Kellen should also work on his throwing technique, which I am sure an NFL coach will address at the next level. Mond would have benefited from having some higher and more bolstered stats throughout his years at A&M as well.
