Dazz Newsome

Pos: WR

School: North Carolina

Ht. 5’11″

Wt. 190 lbs

Strengths:

  • Great slot receiver who can operate well as a smaller Y receiver option
  • Extreme gadget player, can be used as a running back, receiver, and return man
  • Good route running with good footwork at the line of scrimmage and during breaks
  • Great return man, on kick return and punt return
  • Good hands, reliable pass catcher
  • Blazing fast, can create separation solely through his legs.
  • Solid burst off the line of scrimmage.

Weaknesses:

  • Won’t be much more of a receiver than what he currently is. He will certainly be gadget player, but he won’t be able to be a X or Z receiver
  • Needs to work on catching in traffic when being contested
  • Has a smaller body and could get jammed up by bigger defenders at the next level although this wasn’t much of an issue at UNC.

Overall Assessment: Dazz Newsome is among the better slot receivers entering this draft. However, Newsome isn’t just limited to that role, as he is one of the best gadget players in the entire class. Newsome is a great return man, and can line up as a running back or do damage through the slot. As a receiver, his technique is solid, as he has good hands and can run the route tree well. Newsome has a very strong stutter step type move in the slot that catches many cornerbacks off guard at the snap. Newsome can also pick up yards in the running game at a high level. In terms of weaknesses, Newsome is likely going to be limited to a slot receiver role, and won’t become a boundary receiver like an X or a Z. Due to his smaller size, he may struggle in the NFL with bigger body cornerbacks, especially on contested throws. Most of his big plays came after he created space with his blazing speed, however he has room to improve upon his route running and ability to make tough catches. His catch radius could also look to improve once he gets to the next level. Overall, I really like Newsome’s potential to be a top slot receiver in the NFL, and teams will see big results if they utilize him properly.
