Chuba Hubbard put up video games numbers in 2019 before coming back down to earth in 2020. He has a track background and you can tell because of his insane speed and acceleration. He’s the typical fast running back who’s great in space but has problems when in traffic.
Strengths:
- Great Acceleration
Once Chuba Hubbard finds space he can reach his incredibly high top speed extremely quick.
- Amazing Long Speed
Chuba Hubbard led the nation in chunk plays in 2019 because of his combination of acceleration and speed. He uses acceleration to get into the open field and his breakaway speed to finish for big plays.
- Slippery Guy
Chuba Hubbard makes himself tough to tackle because of how he angles his body when teams attempt to tackle him. I guess this would be considered a form of elusiveness.
- Great Vision
Chuba Hubbard has great vision and is able to see where the holes will be before they open which is one of his best traits.
- Nice Patience
Chuba Hubbard has the amazing combination of vision and patience that allows him to wait but keep his feet moving in the right direction so that he can explode out of a hole.
Weaknesses:
- Not Good Running in Tight Spaces
Chuba Hubbard is good when he gets going out in the open field but when he’s met behind the line of scrimmage he’s kind of useless. He tries to do too much at times and results in big losses.
- Doesn’t Push Forward for Extra Yards
Chuba Hubbard in small spaces doesn’t keep his legs churning to push for extra yards every snap. He’s just not that type of back and it limits what he can do in short yardage situations.
- Bad Receiver
Chuba Hubbard is not a good receiver. There are quite a few drops on his tape and overall plays that he should make that he doesn’t. His route running isn’t very crisp either.
- Liability in Pass Protection
In pass protection Hubbard really gets pushed around in one on one situations and when helping to chip edge defenders he doesn’t show a lot of effort nor does he have much of an impact.
Player Comp: Jerick McKinnon of the San Francisco 49ers I would say is a good player comparison for Chuba Hubbard. They are both players who reach their max speed fairly quickly because of their amazing burst and they also both have extremely high top speeds. They have decent elusiveness and good vision, while they were both limited by low strength and bad blocking. McKinnon is a better receiver than Hubbard however.
Final Thoughts: Hubbard in my opinion is going to be a guy who is extremely scheme specific. He has great speed and acceleration but playing at Oklahoma State holes were opening up left and right. That’s not going to be the case at the NFL level and he’s going to have to run in traffic more often which was a clear struggle for him when he played at an elevated level of competition. I think that he’s around a 4th round talent and I think he needs to go to a Shanahan type of system where he will be in space, which is why I think the Jets and Chuba Hubbard are a great match.
