Jalen Mayfield

Pos: OL

School: Michigan

Ht. 6’5″

Wt. 320

Strengths:

  • Big, thick frame. Utilizes this extremely well on passing and running downs
  • Strong hands, with good placement on opposing defensive lineman
  • Decent athlete, with good quickness in the zone run game
  • Can also pull during power run plays when needed with mustering quickness
  • Can contain most pass rush moves and doesn’t get confused
  • Smart offensive lineman
  • Aggressive blocker who does severe damage to defensive lineman in the run game

Weaknesses:

  • Pad level must be fixed, as he is too high on some plays which causes issues with balance.
  • Looked quite athletic on tape, but extremely disappointing pro day numbers cause some concern for me
  • Doesn’t have good balance, he gets his weight over his toes and can be eliminated from plays just like that
  • For an offensive tackle, his feet are not that quick, and should be moving much more than the rate at which he moves them
  • Somewhat short arms for his frame, I would have hoped for 33+ inch arms however he has 32 inch arms.
  • Needs to learn how to handle the bull rush without falling into the QB.

Overall Assessment: Jalen Mayfield was among the top tackles in this draft class, but a disappointing pro day may cause him to fall a little in the draft. Mayfield’s game was highlighted upon his elite athletic ability however his pro day numbers showed a different story. Nonetheless, Mayfield has some very high upside traits, as his film made him seem like a Round 1 prospect. He has a good frame, with good hands and is quick enough to pull and work in a zone run scheme. He is a smart offensive lineman who tends to know who to block and when, without any mental lapses. Mayfield has technique issues to fix, such as his pad level, balance and how to handle the bull rush. All of these are teachable traits. However Mayfield looks and projects to be a guard in the NFL, instead of right tackle which he played throughout college. He will likely be able to use his frame better as a guard instead of a tackle, however I feel like he could play both if needed.
