Justin Fields is quarterback for the University of Ohio State. At Ohio State he did a phenomenal job leading the team to two college football playoff appearances as well as a big win in the 2020 Sugar Bowl over Clemson. He certainly left college as an established winner and he has the traits to back it up with athletic traits, great throwing technique, and great decision making.

Strengths:

  • Great Mobility

Justin Fields ran a 4.4 40 yard dash and he truly plays that fast on the field. He’s a guy who’s not just a scrambling threat but also can you be used as a runner to keep defenses off balance and to help the rushing attack.

  • Very Strong Arm

Justin Fields has phenomenal arm strength and a nice compact throwing motion that allows him to make all the throws. He gets great velocity on tight window throws and can throw it far as well.

  • Consistent Throwing Motion

Justin Fields has one of the most consistent throwing motions with his arm and footwork every play. It leads to him rarely making any completely terrible throws and it’s the reason why he has great accuracy.

  • Can Make Any Thow

Justin Fields can throw from any angle and can throw on the run as well. He has great athleticism and arm strength and mobility, a very tough guy to contain and once he’s on the loose he can seriously make plays as well.

  • Great Decision Maker

Justin Fields is extremely smart with the football and it’s why his interception total was so low for as many psses as he threw. He knows when to throw it and when to give up on a play.

  • Gives His Receivers a Chance Every Play

With some of the other top quarterbacks in this year’s draft class they are very accurate on some plays but there are also other plays where they have complete misfires and overthrows. Fields has no such issues and the receivers have a chance to make a play on the ball every single play.

Weaknesses:

  • Not Great Dealing With Pressure

Everything about seeing pressure seems to rattle Justin Fields. He’s not good at reading blitzes pre snap, and after that he struggles to feel pressure early, and he often panics when he sees pressure instead of staying poised, which leads to unnecessary panic sacks.

  • Slow Reading the Field

Justin Fields doesn’t do an amazing job going through all of his progressions quickly and reading the field. This is the main issues behind some of his worst games like Indiana and Northwestern, because he doesn’t always read the whole field, leading to him missing open guys.

  • Doesn’t Always Lead His Receivers

Justin Fields has enough accuracy to give his receivers a chance on every single pass, but he doesn’t always have pinpoint accuracy to lead his receivers every play. Sometimes he throws a bit high or behind receivers, leading to missed yards after catch.

Player Comp: Some of the strengths and weaknesses for Dak Prescott coming out of college are different from Fields coming out of college but Dak Prescott in the pros is very similar to Justin Fields. Both guys have great consistency with their throwing motion and there’s never any completely terrible throws, but they don’t always have pinpoint accuracy to lead receivers. Both guys are insanely mobile and are threats in the ground game, and both guys are also strong enough to make any throw, even if it’s off platform. Both guys also make smart decisions and could be better getting through all of their progressions. The only big difference I see is Prescott’s significantly better ability identifying and dealing with pressure.

Final Thoughts: A lot of people have Justin Fields as overall their third best player although some have him higher and as of late quite a few people have been moving him lower. I guess I’m going to be a touch higher then people on Fields but he is my QB3 as well as the third best player on my overall board, so it’s not even really a difference of a full pick. A Shanahan style offense where he can move around a lot and he won’t have to be consistently reading the full field and dealing with a lot of pressure because of the scheme would be really beneficial to him, which is why I think the 49ers are where Justin Fields wants to end up, and I think Fields is probably also the best QB for the 49ers.
