Kyle Pitts is a monstrous tight end from the University of Florida. In the NFL he’s going to be able to play both wide receiver and tight end in the NFL. He’s huge but also has a lot of speed and is a great route runner, making him tough to match up against. He’s going to be a versatile weapon for offenses to use.
Strengths:
- Elite Size/Speed Combo
Kyle Pitts is 6’6 240 lbs and he moves like he is 40 pounds lighter than he really is. His ability to not only have good deep speed but also great quickness in his movements is absolutely mind boggling for a guy that’s 240 lbs.
- Great Route Runner
Kyle Pitts plays like a wide receiver in a tight ends body and one of the things that makes him so good in the passing game is his ability to run clean routes and having the athleticism to stop hard on these routes to gain separation from defenders.
- Great Contested Catch Ability
Even when Kyle Pitts is covered he’s not really covered because he is amazing in 50-50 situations. If you throw it up to Pitts he has a massive catch radius with great leaping ability and also the skill to high point the ball and come down with it more often than not.
- Great Hands
Kyle Pitts has sure hands and seeing him drop the ball is a rarity. His hands are sure and they make some spectacular catches too as he can catch away from his frame very well.
- Will Create a Lot of Mismatches
Kyle Pitts is going to be a guy that teams can deploy as an X receiver or as a tight end and no matter where he is he’s going to be a mismatch for the defense. CBs aren’t big enough to win on contested balls and linebackers don’t have the quickness or coverage ability to handle his speed or route running making him such a versatile weapon.
Weaknesses:
- Not a Great Blocker
The only real knock that you can have on Kyle Pitts is that he isn’t the greatest blocker in the world. If teams want him to be an every down tight end he will have to improve this aspect of his game but because he has the versatility to play receiver as well this shouldn’t matter too much, and should be cleaned up fairly easily.
Player Comp: Darren Waller has been tearing up the league at the tight end position in the last few years and his phenomenal athleticism is finally showing and I think Pitts is just like Waller. Both guys are massive targets who have incredible speed and quickness, while also being able to win with great route running or by catching contested passes and using their massive catch radius to haul balls in. They both create a lot of mismatches for the defense and can’t be covered one on one the entire game. The only weakness for both guys is that they aren’t great blockers. Waller is a bit bigger and Pitts is a bit more technically sound with his route running but other than that they are almost the same guy.
Final Thoughts: Some people are very high on Pitts and I’ve seen him in the Top 5 and even the Top 3 of a few people’s big boards and I wouldn’t say I’m that high on Pitts but I still think he’s going to be a great player in the NFL. He’s so athletically gifted but he also is technically sound which makes him even harder to stop, but his value is diminished a bit if you think the blocking is going to be an issue at tight end so you have to move him to the less scarce receiver position. I have him 6th on my big board just below Ja’Marr Chase so I might be a spot lower than consensus on Pitts but I still think he’s a phenomenal player. I think a decent team fit would be the Panthers because they could use another weapon for Darnold to throw to and I trust Joe Brady to utilize him extremely well.
