Strengths:
- Amazing Hand Usage
Landon Dickerson, despite being an absolutely massive dude who can push guys around can also be described as a technician because his technique is that clean. His hand work is phenomenal and he delivers punches with great timing and placement, and those punches are pretty strong and effective as well.
- Great Balance Throughout the Whole Rep
Many guys will play with inconsistent balance and weight distribution throughout the rep but Dickerson does a phenomenal job of keeping his weight back and not lunging forward off balance at any point in the rep.
- Strong Anchor
Landon Dickerson is a huge player and when he anchors down you cannot bull rush your way through him. Once he sits down low and gets his feet in the ground you’re not moving him off his spot.
- Plays With Great Leverage
Landon Dickerson does a phenomenal job getting great knee bend and sinking his hips low every single rep to keep his pads low and have the leverage advantage almost every play.
- High Football IQ
One of the best parts about Landon Dickerson’s game is just how smart he is. Not only will he call protections at the line of scrimmage but he will also quickly read and pass off blitzes as well as figure out how to position himself to reach multiple guys on the second level of the defense despite not being the quickest guy in the world.
Weaknesses:
- Short Arms
Landon Dickerson has phenomenal hand work and his somewhat short arms didn’t affect him in college but in the NFL if he is outreached by longer defensive linemen this could limit the effectiveness of his hand usage.
- Not Agile
When Landon Dickerson is running up field he looks heavy footed and doesn’t look like a smooth mover. He’s not incredibly quick which limits what schemes he can play in.
- Injury Concerns
Landon Dickerson would be higher on most people’s boards if he didn’t have injury concerns, with an knee issue popping up in 2016 and then again in 2020 as well as an ankle injury in 2017 and 2018. A clean bill of health will go a long way toward the success of Dickerson.
Player Comp: Travis Frederick may seem like a lofty comparison but if Dickerson stays healthy and hits his ceiling which I think he has a higher shot at doing than most prospects he can be just as good as Frederick. They are extremely similar players with both guys being huge dudes who are maulers that finish guys, but they also play a very smart brand of football. They are technically sound with their hand usage and they play with phenomenal leverage, and they’re both very keen at calling protections and identifying stunts and passing them off mid play. The weakness for both guys is their mobility and overall I think these guys are incredibly similar players and if DIckerson stays healthy I don’t see any reason why he won’t be just as good as Frederick.
Final Thoughts: Landon Dickerson is certainly a guy that I like more than the general consensus. Injuries are just not a thing I factor in a whole bunch considering I don’t have access to the medical reports, and his tape on the field is phenomenal. He has strength and he pairs that with amazing technique and a football IQ that is through the roof. He simply understands the game and when you combine that with a decent athletic profile he’s a guy that I would take in the mid late part of Round 1, quite a bit higher than the Round 2 buzz he’s getting before the draft. Dickerson is going to be a guy who is much better suited for teams that have a power run scheme rather than a zone blocking run scheme because of the strength and mobility limitations. I’m going to go with Pittsburgh as a great fit because they lost two solid interior lineman with Pouncey and Feiler leaving, and now they need someone to fill the interior and pave the way for whoever their next RB is.
