Samuel Cosmi is a super athletic tackle from the University of Texas. Size wise his frame is above average and at that frame he has insane mobility in all directions and uses it extremely well. He certainly is a project player and has a few issues that he needs to fix but if he does end up fixing these issues his ceiling is through the roof.
Strengths:
- Very Athletic Player
Cosmi has a lot that he needs to work on technically but the reason so many people have fallen in love with Cosmi is because of how athletic he is. He’s a big guy at 6’6 315 that can move well in all directions and his 9.99 RAS after testing in all athletic categories shows just how good he is.
- Great Mobility
Sam Cosmi does a great job utilizing his mobility. He does a great job cutting off speed rushers off the edge, and he also climbs on to the second level extremely well.
- Strong Punches
Sam Cosmi delivers a big blow when he lands his punches. His punches are also pretty timely and he understands when to punch, although his placement could use work.
- Reacts to Blitzes Well
Sam Cosmi does a great job identifying when defensive coordinators are trying to throw unusual blitzes and stunts his way. He quickly reacts to these exotic looks, and it shows his high football IQ.
- Recovers Quickly
Even when Samuel Cosmi is beaten from his anchor position he recovers extremely quickly when he was beat and is still able to salvage bad reps, which is what makes him such an appealing prospect.
Weaknesses:
- Bad Hand Placement/Length
Sam Cosmi needs to work on his hand placement. His punches are strong but they don’t always land on target, and he pairs that with short arms that didn’t get in the way much in college but could allow NFL defensive linemen to outreach him.
- Low Functional Strength
Sam Cosmi is not a guy who can consistently win well at the point of attack. His pad level issues don’t help at all and when you combine that with a lanky frame, you get a guy who gets pushed around sometimes.
- Balance Issues
Cosmi is a taller guy who is very lanky which leads to pad level issues. He plays too tall often and doesn’t get very good knee bend, which leads to him being off balance way too often.
Player Comp: I think Taylor Decker is a very solid player comparison for Sam Cosmi. Coming out of college Decker wasn’t quite the athletic freak that Cosmi is but he was certainly a very athletic player. Both guys are pretty quick and have extremely strong punches, with the ability to recover extremely well if they’re beat. Both guys identify stunts and blitzes extremely well. Their concerns are similar as well with both guys coming out of college playing too upright leading to them losing leverage battles and having bad balance, as well as both guys having low functional strength at the point of attack. Decker’s hand placement sets him apart from Cosmi for now but Cosmi can certainly get that fixed up in the NFL.
Final Thoughts: Samuel Cosmi is a guy that some are really high on and some are really low on because of how high of a ceiling he has, but also the risk involved in picking Cosmi. He is an athletic freak but has quite a few issues that he needs to fix in the NFL if he wants to be a truly good offensive lineman, and honestly I think a lot of his issues are quite fixable. The functional strength might have to be something a team has to deal with but other than that I think that some teams can really mold Cosmi into a great player. Overall I think he should go in the mid to late part of Round 1 which may be just a touch where Cosmi averages out in most people’s opinions. The scheme he goes to doesn’t really matter so any team with a need at left tackle would be a good fit for Cosmi, and I think the Steelers would be a good landing spot considering how well they develop offensive linemen, and they have a need at LT after the departure of Alejandro Villanueva.
