Strengths:
- Amazing Run Blocker
Tommy Tremble is a blocker who loves to be aggressive and attack defensive players. He clears the way in the run game and can move people because of his technique and aggressiveness.
- Good Pass Blocker
Tremble does a great job blocking in the passing game as well, namely in the play action passing game. He is very strong and has great positioning which allows him to consistently win blocking reps.
- Quick Player
Tommy Tremble is certainly a player who is on the quicker side for tight ends. He’s not small either so he combines decent size with good speed and quickness that allow him to run past people.
- Good Body Control in Traffic
Tremble can occasionally make some very tough catches in traffic because he has phenomenal body control in the air and can deal with contact.
Weaknesses:
- Terrible Hands/Ball Skills
One of Tommy Tremble’s biggest issues is that his hands are not good. He had more drops than touchdowns, and this is because of a variety of factors including bad ball skills and concentration drops.
- Route Running Needs a Lot of Work
Tommy Tremble is not an advanced route runner at all and he doesn’t use good fakes and sell routes well to gain separation. He also doesn’t vary his speeds on similar routes so he gives away what route he’s running way too often.
- Not Going to Be a Great Receiver Immediately
As a receiver Tommy Tremble isn’t going to have an instant impact. He doesn’t do anything spectacularly. He’s not a refined route runner, his hands aren’t great, and he’s not amazing after the catch so there’s really nothing that he’s great at in the receiving game and he won’t be a factor in the receiving game for a while.
Player Comp: Tremble was tough to find a player comp because it’s rare to find guys who are great blockers and have the potential to become amazing receiving threats but have limitations that get in the way. I think Chris Herndon could be a decent comparison because similarly to Tremble both guys are very athletic and are great blockers in the pass and run games. They both have good size and are very quick and can win contested catches, but the reason they aren’t as good in the passing game as they could be are inconsistent hands and bad route running. Herndon is more of an after the catch threat but I can see Tremble being just as good of a player in the NFL.
Final Thoughts: I think I’m around the general consensus on Tommy Tremble when I say that he’s a Round 3 quality player. He’s very refined blocking wise which gives him a high floor the second that he comes into the league and he also has insane athleticism which gives him high upside as well, it’s just unlikely that he hits that upside with all of the technical flaws he has in his receiving game. I’d say that he will most likely succeed in a play action system because that’s what his blocking ability really supports. That would make the Titans a good fit if they want a guy to replace Jonnu Smith who they lost this offseason.
