Trevon Moehrig is a safety prospect who played his college ball at Texas Christian University. He has a decent athletic profile with solid size and speed but nothing out of the ordinary. He has great ball skills and is a hard hitter but sometimes he needs to tone down his aggressiveness and if he accomplishes that he’ll be a great free safety in the NFL.

Strengths:

  • Good Size/Speed Combo

Trevon Moehrig has a good athletic profile with solid size and speed. He’s 6’1 202 which is plenty big enough for the safety position and he has the long speed, quickness, and change of direction to be affective.

  • Phenomenal Ball Skills

One of the best parts of Moehrig’s game is how good his ball skills are. He frequently locates the ball and gets his hands on it, and he’s also skilled at reading the receivers hands when he’s turned around.

  • Hard Hitter When Playing Downhill

When Moehrig gets going downhill he comes down really hard and delivers big hits. He can be a tone setter for a defense at the next level.

  • Good One on One Positioning Deep

When Moehrig is faced by receivers in one on one scenarios he positions himself extremely well and gains leverage over the top which allows him to frequently win these reps.

Weaknesses:

  • Takes Bad Tackling Angles

Moehrig will overrate how fast he is way too often and this leads to him taking absolutely terrible tackling angles and letting offensive players get around him and easily run past him.

  • Slow to Diagnose Run At Times

Trevon Moehrig can get caught up on his assignment in the pass game for too long and that leads to him not reading and diagnosing the run early on which allows extra yards for the offense.

  • Too Aggressive in Pass Coverage

Trevon Moehrig is way too aggressive in pass coverage and he frequently tries to undercut routes which leads to him getting burned down the field on double routes.

Player Comp: I think that a good player comp for Trevon Moehrig is Jessie Bates when he was coming out of college rather than when he was in the pros. Both guys have similar size around 6’1 200 and are also both very quick and agile to get to their spots. They both have great ball skills and know how to find the ball. They are also both hard hitters who punish over the middle and their downfall has been their over aggressiveness in the run and on double moves, as well as their late reaction when diagnosing runs. Bates is a bit quicker and in the pros he really harnessed his aggressiveness and became a more controlled player which Moehrig will have to do if he wants to be successful.

Final Thoughts: Moehrig is my Number 3 rated safety and he doesn’t crack the first round. He has a lot of talent he just needs to control his aggression and while his size/speed profile is good its nothing completely out of the ordinary that rarely ever comes around. I’d be comfortable using a pick on a somewhat high ceiling player who could actually hit his ceiling like Moehrig in the mid 2nd round which may be a bit low on him compared to others. He’s going to be best suited to play free safety for teams that play Cover 1 or Cover 3 so I’d say the Panthers are a good fit because that’s the coverage they play primarily and they have a need at free safety.
