There’s no beating around the bush here Trevor Lawrence is by far the Number 1 pick in the NFL draft. Many are touting him as perhaps the best quarterback prospect to ever come out of college and other than Chris Simms there’s practically no one who doesn’t believe he’s the best player in this year’s draft class. He’s a generational talent and will certainly be a great franchise quarterback.

Strengths:

  • Ideal Size

Trevor Lawrence is 6’6 220 lbs which is the perfect size for an NFL quarterback. He has a nice stocky build which allows him to take hits and make all the throws but he also has great mobility so it’s not like his size limits his movements.

  • Super Strong Arm

Trevor Lawrence has an extremely strong arm that not only allows him to fire deep balls down the field, but also an arm that is strong arm to fire throws into tight windows quickly before defenders close on the pass.

  • Accuracy to All Parts of the Field

Trevor Lawrence has great accuracy in the short, intermediate, and most impressive the deep parts of the field. Having great deep accuracy is just something rarely seen in college QBs but Trevor not only hits his targets deep downfield but he’s still leading them and leaving room open for run after catch.

  • Extremely Mobile

Trevor Lawrence has mobility that not only helps him in scrambling situations but also makes him a legit running threat. Mobility is a trait that’s becoming increasingly valuable in quarterbacks and Lawrence has that as well.

  • Great Pocket Presence

Lawrence does not panic at the first sign of pressure but rather he stays poised and has a great feel for the pressure. He naturally shifts away from the pressure which is a trait rarely seen at the college level.

  • Great Touch

Some stronger arm quarterbacks who can fit in passes into any window in year’s past have had the downfall of not being able to use touch passes at the right time, and they often haven’t been able to do it well. Lawrence has no such issues and he both effectively throws and uses touch passes when necessary.

  • Smart Decision Maker

Lawrence is very smart with the football and doesn’t make bad reads and unnecessarily throw into multiple defenders. He knows when to tuck the ball and run as well which is also a valuable skill.

  • Great Outside the Pocket

Once Trevor Lawrence escapes the pocket he again becomes pretty hard to stop. Not only can he evade defenders with his mobility, as well as shake off defenders with his body, but he can also throw accurately on the run.

Weaknesses:

  • Had Trouble Reading Intricate Play Calls

Lawrence had some trouble reading some of the more complex looks he faced namely against LSU in 2019 and Virginia Tech in 2020. Opposing defenders’ coordinators threw creeper blitzes and shifted guys around in coverage and he looked a bit flustered at times, and it’s something he’ll have to fix.

  • A Little Slow Reading Field at Times

Another thing that Lawrence could stand to improve in is reading the whole field. He sometimes will lock onto his first read a bit too long and he won’t always use his eyes to manipulate defenders when he needs to.

Player Comp: Trevor Lawrence is sort of like a fully developed Josh Allen. Both guys have insane physical traits with great builds and great mobility that allows them to not only scramble but also become a rushing threat. Both guys have accuracy to all parts of the field, and they certainly are well above average accuracy wise when throwing deep. They have super strong arms to fire in any pass as well as throwing deep and some of the issues of reading the field slow as well as not understanding super complex looks is also very similar. Look for Lawrence to be just as good of a player in a few years as well.

Final Thoughts: There’s not really much to say here because it’s obvious Lawrence should be the #1 overall pick. I feel the same way and pretty much everyone does although Lawrence could end up not being the best QB in the draft, but that’s going to be because of situation rather than talent. The obvious team fit here is Jacksonville since they’re picking #1 overall.
