Blake Freeland
BYU OT
Games Watched: Oregon, Notre Dame, Arkansas
Summary: Blake Freeland is an underdeveloped but high potential left tackle. He stands at a towering 6’8, but has short arms given his height, and also weighs just 300 lbs although he has room to add weight. He has good lateral mobility allowing him to mirror pass rushers, and he’s most effective in the run game where he uses his quickness to get out in space and his size to wall off defenders. On the downside, his height presents obvious leverage issues and he isn’t technically refined in regards to his footwork or hand usage. He also struggles to stay balanced on double teams, which is yet another technique issue in Freeland’s game.
Pros
- Decent lateral mobility to climb to the next level and match pass rushers
- Very good at smothering defenders with his size in the run game
- Quickly identifies who he should be blocking in pass protection
- Room to get even stronger given his frame
Cons
- Has shorter arms than expected for a guy his size
- Naturally high pad level given his height
- Footwork in his slide needs cleaning up
- Punches don’t have the most accuracy and pop in the world
- Struggles to stay balanced after making contact during double teams
Grade: Blake Freeland gets a late 3rd round grade. He has decent potential but will need to undergo a major technique overhaul to be serviceable in the NFL.
