Cam Smith
South Carolina CB
Games Watched: Clemson, Arkansas, Kentucky
Summary: Cam Smith will be a primarily man corner who is better in press than he is in off man coverage. He has solid traits with decent size and arm length, and he moves pretty well too. He plays with good technique allowing him to keep up with most receivers, and he’s also good at the catch point. The main issues are that he doesn’t have great instincts or route anticipation, and he also has a tendency to take bad tackling angles.
Pros
- Decent speed and acceleration – will be able to keep up with most receivers
- Tracks the ball well and will get his hands on the ball at the highest point
- Turns his hips pretty well
- Maintains good balance throughout the route
- Strong hands can control receivers’ movement
- Is a willing and effective tackler
Cons
- Slow to react and break on underneath routes
- Route anticipation isn’t great, he rarely sees plays develop early
- Has a tendency to overrun the player with the ball creating terrible tackling angles
- Solid but not exceptional athlete
Grade: Cam Smith gets an early 2nd round grade. He’s a solid athlete who can stick with athletic receivers, but he needs to improve his route anticipation skills to succeed in the NFL.
