Devon Witherspoon

Illinois CB

Games Watched: Wyoming, Minnesota, Michigan

Summary: Devon Witherspoon is a feisty corner who is experienced playing man coverage but could benefit from playing in a zone scheme. He is incredibly aggressive and for the most part his speed, instincts, and route anticipation skills allow him to make big plays. He does a great job using his hands to reroute receivers and knock away passes. His aggressiveness does come with its downsides however, as it makes him susceptible to double moves, penalties, and missed tackles.

Pros

  • Plays with NFL speed
  • Phenomenal route anticipation – often runs the route for the receiver
  • Very good cornerback instincts
  • Shows flashes of plays with perfect technique
  • Uses his hands to throw receivers off balance
  • Plays the ball well at the catch point
  • Plays with a fiery attitude

Cons

  • Sometimes gets too aggressive trying to jump routes
  • Grabs receivers before the ball arrives which could lead to penalty issues
  • Liability as a tackler, too easily falls for simple juke moves

Grade: Devon Witherspoon gets an early first round grade. If a coach can control his aggression, he has all the traits to become a top tier corner.
