Gervon Dexter
Florida IDL
Games Watched: Utah, Kentucky, Tennessee
Summary: Gervon Dexter will be best as a two gapping defensive tackle. He disengages quickly and reads and reacts well which is why he’s able to be effective defending two gaps. His punches have pop and overall Dexter has good functional strength, which he often uses to win with bullrushes. He has a good closing burst as well. Unfortunately Dexter’s pass rushing ability is held back by his lackadaisical reaction time and a lack of a varied pass rush skillset. In the run game he loses at the point of attack because of pad level, and simply isn’t strong enough to handle double teams.
Pros
- Has the ability to quickly disengage & tackle and good awareness in the run game allowing him to effectively defend two gaps
- Strong hands that are able to move offensive linemen
- Decent functional strength that allows him to get good push in his bullrush
- Good closing speed when chasing after quarterbacks and ball carriers
Cons
- Very late to react to the snap combined with below average first step quickness leads to incredibly slow starts
- Doesn’t have the anchor to handle double teams which was a major problem for him
- Lacks developed counters as a pass rusher
- Loses at the point of attack because of leverage issues
Grade: Gervon Dexter gets a 4th round grade. He has to become more technically skilled to even have a chance of unlocking the potential of his athleticism.
