Jaelyn Duncan
Maryland IOL
Games Watched: Michigan, Purdue, Ohio State
Summary: Jaelyn Duncan played left tackle at Maryland but a switch to guard seems necessary for his transition to the NFL. Duncan plays with great pad level and has good mobility and footwork making him a valuable run blocker. He struggles more in pass protection where his short arms and weak anchor leave him vulnerable to speed to power rushes. He also needs to improve the quickness at which he gets into his pass set, and his awareness to identify who he should be blocking.
Pros
- Has the mobility to get to the second level
- Great footwork in the run game to cleanly meet defenders out in space
- Athletic enough to recover after he’s beaten
- Plays with good pad level to win leverage battles
Cons
- Short arms make it easy for defenders to get into his chest and disengage from blocks
- Not explosive out of his stance in pass protection
- Anchor is not strong enough to handle the physicality of NFL pass rushers
- Should be more aware to find work, on quite a few plays he’s not blocking anyone when he could be
Grade: Jaelyn Duncan gets a 4th round grade. He has the required mobility and footwork to be a guard but lacks size and strength making him a risky pick.
