Joe Tippmann
Wisconsin IOL
Games Watched: Ohio State, Michigan State, Nebraska
Summary: Joe Tippmann is an incredibly smart center who should be ready to play immediately. He does a great job identifying and adjusting to tricks from the defense both pre-play and during the play. He has a nice combination of strength and movement skills which allows him to clear lanes in the run game as well as effectively protect the passer. His issues stem from his naturally high pad level, as well as slightly underdeveloped hand usage which allows defenders to win leverage battles. He also has a bad tendency to immediately lunge forward off the snap which NFL defenders will abuse.
Pros
- Pretty strong base with a good pass rush anchor
- Does a great job exploding off the snap in the run game
- Has the mobility and strength to quickly and effectively block multiple defenders down the field in the run game
- Has the lateral mobility to stay with defensive linemen in short areas
- Very good awareness to recognize blitzes and stunts from the defense and adjust accordingly
Cons
- Height makes it naturally tough for him to gain the leverage advantage
- Often lunges attempting to make first contact leaving him vulnerable
- Needs to improve his hand timing and head level to protect his chest
Grade: Joe Tippmann gets a late 2nd round grade. He has good intelligence and athleticism but has room to grow as a player.
