John Michael Schmitz

Minnesota IOL

Games Watched: Michigan State, Purdue, Penn State

Summary: John Michael Schmitz will be a solid center at the next level. He is a strong player, both when he’s anchoring down against the pass or driving defenders in the run game. He’s a technically sound run blocker and does a good job using his hands to keep defenders at bay. He’s also smart, making all the calls at the line for Minnesota. His athletic profile is a bit lacking as he doesn’t have amazing range as a run blocker, and struggles to redirect his weight against quicker defenders. He compounds his lack of flexibility by taking bad blocking angles.

Pros

  • Has a very strong anchor in pass protection
  • Uses his strength and technique to consistently win at the point of attack in the run game
  • Good technique to win on cut-off blocks and reach blocks
  • Well timed and placed punches are able to stun defenders
  • Has great football IQ to make calls on the line as center

Cons

  • Lacks range to execute blocks far down the field
  • Needs to take better angles when pursuing defenders
  • Not the most flexible player which makes it tough to adjust his weight

Grade: John Michael Schmitz gets a mid 2nd round grade. He’s a smart player who will shore up the middle of the line for whatever team drafts him.
