Luke Schoonmaker
Michigan TE
Games Watched: Maryland, Michigan State, Ohio State
Summary: Luke Schoonmaker is a primarily blocking tight end at this point in his career. He’s an average athlete who isn’t a major threat in the receiving game because of his lack of explosiveness and route running technique. What he does well is utilize his size and strength. Sometimes he uses his strength to create separation but mostly he wins as a blocker. He plays with good technique as a blocker which makes him effective in the run game.
Pros
- Decent size
- Uses his strength well at the stem of the route
- Does a good job catching in stride
- Good hand placement when blocking
- Positions his body well to create tough tackling angles
Cons
- Not adept at creating separation from defenders
- Doesn’t gain many yards after the catch
- Occasionally allows defenders to get under him and uproot him
Grade: Luke Schoonmaker gets a 5th round grade. He’s not developed as a receiver and being an above average blocking tight end just isn’t that valuable in the NFL.
