Luke Wypler

Ohio State IOL

Games Watched: Iowa, Michigan, Georgia

Summary: Luke Wypler is a center best utilized for a zone rushing team. Given his quickness early in plays, his lateral agility to mirror defenders, and his understanding of blocking angles, Wypler does a lot of damage as a run blocker. As a pass protector he plays with good technique and hand usage to minimize the negative impact of his size and length. His lack of play strength affects both his finishing ability as a run blocker and anchor as a pass blocker. He also has short arms and isn’t the smartest player for a center.

Pros

  • Quick off the snap and when climbing to second level
  • Has good lateral agility allowing him to match defenders movements
  • Takes good angles to beat defenders to landmarks
  • Stays square with good pad level to neutralize pass rushers
  • Has developed hand fighting skills, throws well timed and placed punches

Cons

  • Needs to improve his functional strength to improve his anchor in pass protection and improve as a mover in the run game
  • Short arms allow defenders to make first contact
  • A little slow to read the field and see blitzes/stunts

Grade: Luke Wypler gets a mid 3rd round grade. He’s technically savvy but needs to become stronger to be a reliable starter.
