Michael Mayer

Notre Dame TE

Games Watched: Ohio State, BYU, USC

Summary: Michael Mayer is the most complete tight end in the 2023 draft class. He has great size and moves decently well too. He is a very nuanced route runner and he has great ball skills and body control allowing him to make crazy contested catches. He is very strong which allows him to gain yards after the catch and beat guys with physicality when blocking. As a blocker, however, his punch timing and angles he takes could use work. He’s also not an incredible athlete, limiting his potential after the catch.

Pros

  • Can line up inline, in the slot, or even as an outside receiver
  • Very nuanced route runner
  • Amazing in contested catch situations
  • Has very good body control
  • Frequently falls forward for extra yards
  • Good strength and physicality at the point of attack

Cons

  • Not incredibly explosive after the catch
  • Needs to approach defenders with better angles when blocking
  • Doesn’t get his hands up to block early leading to defenders frequently getting first contact
  • Often the last player to react to the snap

Grade: Michael Mayer gets a late 1st round grade. He is a great receiver and has all the tools to become a great blocker as well.
