One Liner: Instinctive corner who wins with processing, route anticipation and ball skills

Strengths:

  • Very good route anticipation. Smith plays with great route anticipation in press. He is a patient mover that keeps his body square to prepare for routes, and oftentimes shows the ability to run the routes for the receiver.
  • Very good processor. Smith is a great processor of passing and running plays, which allows him to thrive as a good read and react corner.
  • Very good ball skills. Smith put up great numbers over the past 2 years, and shows that he has a projectable catch radius alongside good feel for timing to disrupt throwing windows in man or zone looks.

Weaknesses:

  • Adequate athleticism. Smith lacks the high level long speed or short area quickness out of his transitions to be a natural press corner at the next level. He doesn’t have elite athletic traits that pop out that allow him to function fluidly in off man either.
  • Adequate fluidity. Smith has some delay in his hip openings, and looks slightly slow heading into his cross step in off man.

Overall Assessment:  Cam Smith is a zone coverage corner at the next level, who’s processing and instincts make him a perfect corner to read and react to break on plays with his high level ball skills. Although he lacks elite athletic traits, Smith has the ability to be on time in places in zone looks due to his football IQ and ability to attack. Overall, while Smith does have a lower ceiling due to modest athleticism, I think he has a solid spot for himself in the pros as a zone corner.
