Charlie Jones

School: Purdue

Ht. 5’11″

Games Watched: Minnesota, Penn State, Syracuse

One Liner: Reliable slot receiver that wins with route running, hands and football IQ

Strengths:

  • Very good route runner. Jones wins with great route running skills, and has footwork and technique to separate with sharp cuts at the stem.
  • Very good football IQ. Jones is a zone beater, and finds open holes in zones with ease and fluidity.
  • Very good hands. Jones has good hands, and can make some contested grabs in tight situations despite being a smaller receiver.
  • Good toughness. Jones shows good toughness, and much more competitiveness than you would expect for a player his size.

Weaknesses:

  • Adequate athleticism. Jones has adequate athleticism, and isn’t necessarily going to win with long speed or twitch to separate.
  • Adequate YAC ability. Jones lacks the YAC ability that NFL offenses look for today, and doesn’t have a go to trait that could make defenders miss in open space. He is a below average athlete, and doesn’t have much twitch to go along with his game.
  • Marginal size. Jones’ size will hold him back as he has a reduced catch radius and can get outmuscled by bigger corners and safeties over the middle.

Overall Assessment: Charlie Jones is a slot receiver, who’s football IQ and ability to identify soft spots in zone coverage might single handedly land him a slot role in the NFL. He is a good route runner, and plays with great footwork and little wasted steps to separate and create space in man looks. Jones is a tough player, and is able to make contested catches over the middle, however I question how much he can succeed in boundary, congested situations. Jones lacks the athleticism to be a YAC machine, and his size will restrict him from doing everything you ask for out of a receiver. However, Jones shows that he can do his job as a slot receiver really well, which could be all that matters for some teams.
