Clayton Tune
Pos: QB
School: Houston
Ht. 6’2″
Wt. 220
Games Watched: SMU, Tulane, Texas Tech
One Liner: Gunslinging quarterback who wins with arm talent, athleticism, and field vision
Strengths:
- Very good arm talent. Tune has shown the ability to drive the ball deep downfield with sufficient touch and when needed, solid zip. Tune can throw the ball long down the field and has the capability to be a deep ball thrower with his arm strength.
- Good athleticism. Tune is a good athlete, and he can escape the pocket and make something happen with his feet when he senses pressure. He has good contact balance on the run and plays with great intensity and speed.
- Good field vision. Tune always keeps his eyes downfield, and thus has a good understanding of coverages and schemes downfield. When rolling out of the pocket, Tune keeps his eyes downfield and maintains good vision of the play developing.
- Good accuracy. Tune plays with pretty solid accuracy on the first and second levels. He hits targets well on a developed route tree with good ball placement and timing on routes.
Weaknesses:
- Poor decision making. Tune forces pass downfield far too often. Tune has too many instances where he throws the ball to the right spot but just too late which causes turnovers or incompletions. He needs to play with better timing and more poise to prevent errant throws downfield.
- Adequate mechanics. Tune could look to refine some of his throwing mechanics at the next level. He should add more leg and hip drive into his throws and reduce pure arm throws at the next level. This should help with some downfield accuracy issues.
Overall Assessment: Clayton Tune is a high upside backup QB who has some projectable traits to make him a viable pick on Day 3. He has desirable arm talent and has the athletic ability to compete in the NFL today. His experience allows for him to have a knowledgable understanding of downfield coverages and nuances of route progressions and timing. He has solid accuracy on the first and second levels but will need to correct some mechanics to fix some of his downfield accuracy issues. With some better decision making + timing and an improvement to his mechanics, Tune has the potential to see some starting snaps at the next level.
Scheme Fit: Reliable backup QB with starter upside
Pick Projection: Late 4th
Grade: 6.13
