Cody Mauch

Pos: OT

School: North Dakota State

Ht. 6’5″

Wt. 302

Games Watched: Arizona, Illinois State, South Dakota State,

One Liner: Mauling offensive lineman who wins with toughness, athleticism, and range.

Strengths:

  • Very good toughness. Mauch has the extra tenacity that coaches love to see out of their lineman. He plays a violent brand of football and is extremely physical at the point of attack.
  • Good athleticism. Mauch is a solid mover and has the lateral agility to swing and/or pull in man schemes. He has good feet and displays adequate strength to hold up against bigger blockers as well. He also offers some positional versatility on the offensive line as he took snaps from different positions at the Senior Bowl and showed off some good traits.
  • Good range. Mauch has the ability to work downfield and identify defenders at the second level to seal off in the run game. When swinging and pulling, Mauch is able to hold up his size well and move fluidly to readjust his body and seal off blockers in his vicinity.

Weaknesses:

  • Adequate technique. Mauch lacks the fundamentals right now to truly be a dominant force on the interior. He needs to improve his hand placement and clean up his footwork, as his toughness and strength from college will likely not have the same impact in the pros.
  • Adequate size. Mauch’s size is not ideal, especially 32 inch arms. With a lack of technique already on his plate, having slightly shorter arms would also not help him defend against big bodied rushers in the NFL. He will obviously have to kick in to guard in the pros, and I also think he should look to add some more bulk so that he can withstand some of the bigger guys at the next level.

Overall Assessment:  Cody Mauch is a fun, dominating watch on tape. He played with great toughness and physicality, and capitalized on weaker opponents with his physicality that converted to dominating functional strength on flim. He is a solid athlete and displays decent range as well to get downfield. While he is an entertaining prospect, Mauch will need to improve the technicality of his game, and look to develop more coordinated and efficient movements in his lower body and upper body attacking. There will be some work needed with Mauch, and his frame isn’t the best as of right now, but coachse have a lot to work with and could be enticed by his play style.

Scheme Fit: Zone blocking guard until he adds some more bulk to be a scheme versatile interior offensive lineman
