Cory Trice Jr.

Pos: DB

School: Purdue

Ht. 6’3″

Wt. 206

Games Watched: Penn State, Michigan, Maryland

One Liner: Big corner who wins with size, physicality and fluid hips

Strengths:

  • Very good size. Trice has great size to be a dominating force starting from the release point, throughout route progressions, and especially at the catch point. He has great long arms that allow him to be physical and jam at the LOS to disrupt route development.
  • Very good physicality. Trice is a physical corner who always has a hand on the receiver, regardless of the level of the route. Trice has a nasty jam off the LOS that takes the life out of the route for smaller receivers. At the catch point he has the length to disrupt the coordination of the pass and cause an incompletion.
  • Good hip fluidity. For his size, Trice’s hips move with relative ease and he can easily turn and run with receivers going downfield. His hips aren’t extremely greased, yet they do the job more often than not, showing positive signs for his ability as a press corner in the pros.
  • Good footwork. Trice has good footwork off the snap, and is patient in mirroring and keeping his shoulders square with the receiver. He doesn’t fall for initial fakes, and plays out the route with great timing as a press corner to prevent biting on a double move.

Weaknesses:

  • Adequate route anticipation. Trice doens’t play with much route anticipation at this point, and it seems like he is in pursuit when in coverage, leading to double moves on certain occasions that could project to bad beats at the next level.
  • Adequate athleticism. Trice lacks the long speed or the short area quickness to be a dominant zone or off man corner at the next level. This does hurt him in press a little bit, but his ball skills and hip fluidity cover up some speed issues.

Overall Assessment: Cory Trice is a typical press man boundary corner at the next level. He is a physical, long corner that will impose his will on smaller receivers at the release due to his great jams and ability to disrupt route progressions early on in their development. He isn’t scheme versatile due to a lack of natural athleticism and developing route anticipation and understanding, however he can find a home as a natural press corner in the pros due to his technique and patience he showed in college. NFL defensive coordinators will have a lot to work with in terms of Trice’s press ability, and once he develops a knack for understanding route combo’s, I see a productive future for Cory Trice in the pros.
