Dawand Jones

Pos: OT

School: Ohio State

Ht. 6’8″

Wt. 374

Games Watched: Penn State, Michigan, Georgia

One Liner: Behemoth offensive tackle who wins with power, size and athletic ability.

Strengths:

  • Elite frame. Jones possesses the size that offensive line coaches dream of. His 374 pound weight listing is slightly misleading, as it suggests he holds a lot of bad weight, but he is built with mostly muscle and little to no poor weight.
  • Very good power. With his arms and hand size, Jones is able to brush off power rushers easily, and can deter just about any small speed rusher off their track.
  • Very good athletic ability. For a man his size, Jones maintains high level foot speed and balance in diagonal passing sets, and can match edge rushers for the most part, or make up for lost ground with his 36 inch arms(!).

Weaknesses:

  • Adequate technique. Jones still needs to refine some of his technique, specifically with punch timing in his pass sets. I would like to see Jones also develop his recovery technique when beat.
  • Adequate football IQ. Jones struggles with twists and isn’t the best at picking up safety blitzes.

Overall Assessment: Dawand Jones is a rare prospect who possesses God given size and length and can also move well with little to no bad weight. However, Jones is not polished in terms of technique or IQ, with improvements needed as a pass blocker. Jones has the potential to be an elite force on the right side or left side at the next level. However, all of this is assuming that Jones maintains his muscle to body fat ratio and stays in the same shape he was in for the Senior Bowl and Combine.

Scheme Fit: Zone blocking right tackle.

Pick Projection: Late 1st
