Derick Hall

Pos: Linebacker

School: Auburn

Ht. 6’3″

Wt. 256

Games Watched: vs Alabama(2021), vs Penn State(2022)

Strengths:

  • Elite first step. Takes a long stride of the snap and is more often than not the first player past the LOS and is into his rush as the rest of the line is getting off the ground.
  • Elite Athletic Ability. Hall flies around the field and is speedy off the edge. His lateral quickness put him in a good position to stunt or to pave a lane against blockers at Auburn, though he may not see many stunt situations in the NFL.
  • Very Good arm power. Strong arms allows him to jolt and out-leverage tackles at the point of attack and get them off balance.
  • Very Good Hand Placement. Places his hands right on the shoulders and is able to use this placement to take advantage of tackles when they are off balance
  • Very Good Motor and Effort. Hall is a relentless player, who will go sideline to sideline to make a play and has consistent drive in terms of effort.
  • Very Good Frame and Physical Build. Hall has a strong, chiseled upper body that allows him to put power into his punches and drive weaker offensive lineman back. Because of this, he is able to compete against interior offensive lineman and even contain and set edges against double teams, holding his ground against the run and paving room for fellow rushers.
  • Good Football IQ. He is able to process passing downs and gauges when to move up or down the pocket to follow the QB. When dropping back into zone he has good awareness of his surroundings and keeps his open and fluid ready to make a play on the football

Weaknesses:

  • Adequate Bend. While Hall can corner well and has solid flexion in his ankles, his overall hip fluidity and bend against bigger tackles is still something to be desired. He can pull this trick out of the bag with one of his elite starts off the line, but more often than not he is using power from his long arms to out-leverage the blocker.
  • Adequate Rush moves. Once engaged at the point of attack, Hall really doesn’t have a go to move apart from his rip that mainly comes from arm strength. Hall should look to develop a spin or swim move to add to his arsenal, which shouldn’t be a tough ask considering his understanding and execution of leverage and timing.
  • Marginal balance against bigger tackles. There are instances in the run game where Hall can be completely removed from the play by the stronger, taller tackles. He should look to develop functional play strength that occurs throughout the body, with more leg drive to contain in inside run situations.

Overall Assessment:

Pro Comp: Josh Uche

Scheme Fit: Every down player in an odd Front 7/Wide 9 Tech that can drop back into zone on early downs. May be used as a third down rotational rusher/zone coverage linebacker early in career.
