Dorian Thompson-Robinson

Pos: QB

School: UCLA

Ht. 6’1″

Games Watched: USC, Oregon,

One Liner: Aggressive quarterback who wins with arm talent, athleticism, and experience

Strengths:

  • Elite athletic ability. DTR is a weapon to make plays happen from inside and outside the pocket, as he creates with his legs and demonstrates elite athletic traits, boosting his floor at the next level.
  • Very good upperbody throwing mechanics. DTR displays a nice, quick throwing motion which allows the ball to fly out of his hands at the top of his release.
  • Very good football IQ. DTR is an experienced college QB at this point in his career, thus demonstrating high level understanding of coverages and where he can fit the ball on tight window throws.
  • Good field vision. DTR reads the entire field and is a good processor from primary routes to checkdowns.
  • Good feel for pressure. DTR keeps his head on a swivel and displays the ability to escape and evade blindside pressure with a good mental clock ticking.
  • Good 1st and 2nd level accuracy. Naturally, DTR is an accurate thrower especially on short and medium routes. He demonstrates the proper zip and timing to get the job done as a reliable West Coast-RPO passer.

Weaknesses:

  • Marginal touch throws. DTR throws heaters all over the field but his consistent strikes come back to hurt him when he doesn’t place enough air or touch on his second and third level throws downfield
  • Adequate decision making. DTR tries to do too much at times and may make ill-advised decisions that oftentimes result in interceptions and turnovers.
  • Adequate footwork. DTR displays inconsistent footwork throwing from the pocket, which throws off his passing mechanics and upperbody motion, deterring his natural accuracy.
  • Adequate arm strength. DTR can zip the ball but doesn’t have the throw power to win off deep balls and deep ball accuracy.

Overall Assessment: Dorian Thompson-Robinson projects as a high floor QB in the pros due to his immense athletic ability and his understanding of opposing coverages. DTR is a mentally sound QB who makes good reads and demonstrates quality processing ability that allows him to make tight window throws. However, DTR needs to improve his decision making as he tries to play hero ball far too often. DTR is also a limited prospect as he lacks deep ball technicality and needs to improve some nuances as a passer and lower body mechanics before he can be a viable starter at the next level.
