Ji’Ayir Brown
Pos: Safety
School: Penn State
Ht. 5’11″
Wt. 203
Games Watched: Michigan, Ohio State, Purdue
One Liner: Rangy, explosive safety who wins athleticism, burst and strength in and out of the box.
Strengths:
- Very good explosiveness. Brown explodes off the snap and comes attacking downhill against the run.
- Very good range. Brown has the speed and lateral agility to go sideline to sideline, although he wasn’t asked to do this often at Penn State.
- Very good motor. Brown is a high energy player who consistently attacks and tries to make a play on the football.
- Good athleticism. Brown is a fluid athlete who can flip his hips without much stiffness and can provide an added boost on the field with quickness, burst and speed.
- Good ball skills. Brown has 10 interceptions over the past 2 seasons, a good number for a safety who played often in the box.
Weaknesses:
- Adequate instincts. Brown displayed average instincts for the most part but his motor and burst often hurt him when he gets fooled by the QB’s eyes in play action, causing him to bite and lose eye discipline.
- Adequate tackling and angles. Brown comes in hot with explosiveness but his angles aren’t always the best and sometimes cause missed tackles on his end.
Overall Assessment: Brown is a high character, energetic leader of the Penn State team who’s energy is fully displayed on tape. He is eager to make something happen with exciting explosiveness and burst that lasts through each play on tape. He’s a good athlete that has shown his ability to make plays on the ball in college. Needs to develop patience and understanding of QB tricks and instincts, and control some of the excitement when taking angles to tackle and wrapping up.
