Joe Tippmann
Pos: IOL
School: Wisconsin
Ht. 6’6″
Wt. 313
Games Watched: Ohio State, Rutgers, Penn State
One Liner: Tall, athletic center who wins with good quickness, high football IQ and plus hand usage.
Strengths:
- Very good athleticism. Tippmann is an excellent mover and has the quicks to make it to the next level with ease. He has good lateral agility which he demonstrates in gap and man plays when pulling.
- Very good football IQ. Tippmann identifies blitzes and stunts at a high level, pre snap, quarterbacking the offensive line.
- Good hand usage. Tippmann uses his hands well and is able to make solid placement most of the time, generating solid power and drive.
- Good strength. Tippmann demonstrates the right amount of strength for a center and is able to create force with his anchor and arms.
Weaknesses:
- Marginal technique. Tippmann plays smart but he needs to match and correlate his upper body movements with his lower body. He seems to be on his toes too much, leaning forward and losing position often.
- Marginal pad level. Tippmann needs to figure out how to consistently stay low at the next level, especially considering his 6’6 height.
Overall Assessment: Tippmann is an athletic, strong and knowledgeable interior offensive lineman who can be a Day 1 starter for teams at the next level. His intangible traits make him a quality lineman, however he will have to refine his technique at the next level. With good coaching, he needs to be taught proper pad level and body control to prevent lunging. I like Tippmann in a zone scheme where he can utilize his athleticism and lateral quickness to get to the next level.
Scheme Fit: Zone blocker in an inside/outside zone scheme
Pick Projection: Early Day 2
Grade: 6.44
