Joey Porter Jr.

Pos: CB

School: Penn State

Ht. 6’2”

Wt. 193

Games Watched: Ohio State, Michigan, Purdue

One Liner: Lengthy cornerback who wins with arm length, strength and technique

Strengths:

  • Elite arm length. With 34 inch arms, Porter will have some of the longest arms of any boundary corner in the pros. His length is visible as he dominates in press coverage, ready to jam and disrupt routes early in their progression.
  • Very good press footwork. Porter has good footwork that allows him to stay square with the receiver and shows the desired patience to maintain good positioning through the development of the route. Having long arms allows him to have time to readjust if needed while he jams the receiver.
  • Very good strength. Porter has really quality strength that allows him to punch receivers out of their routes off the release. At the catch point, Porter utilizes core and arm strength to jar passes free and contest in 50/50 situations.
  • Good instincts. Porter flashes the instincts needed to anticipate routes out of man and expect double moves from receivers downfield. In press situations he shows off a disciplined and tamed approach to defending receivers.

Weaknesses:

  • Adeqaute change of direction. Porter lacks the athletic ability to change direction fluidly at the POA. His plant and go is below average, and he is a little stiff in his hips preventing him from readjusting on a timely manenr from sudden breaks and cuts.
  • Adequate hip fluidity. Porter’s lack of hip fluidity throws off his ability to stay on his man consistently as he isn’t a speed burner that can catch up right away on deep routes after his transition in a timely manner. His hip stiffness plays a role in his adequate plant and go as well as below average change of direction skills in transition.

Overall Assessment: Joey Porter Jr. is a press man corner at the next level, and has excellent arm length to disrupt receivers early in their release. He is an average athlete, and isn’t incredibly fast, but his strength and press technique allow him to be a solid threat at the next level as a boundary corner. Porter’s limitations are straightforward, and it will be up to him to work around this moving forward. He has some areas to improve as a corner in terms of technique in his transitions, but as long as he capitalizes on his arm length and strength, he can be a reliable boundary corner at the next level.
