Jonathan Mingo

Pos: WR

School: Ole Miss

Ht. 6’2″

Wt. 225

Games Watched: Alabama, Arkansas, LSU

One Liner: Big bodied receiver who wins as an aggressive blocker with reliable hands and route running footwork.

Strengths:

  • Very good blocking. Mingo is a reliable blocker for screens and is often placed in-line almost like a tight end with his ability to be aggressive and throw punches at the POA.
  • Very good hands. Mingo has reliable hands and can make catches in traffic in contested situations. He displays the ability to make crafty one handed catches and will be a reliable pass catcher moving forward.
  • Good deep route running footwork. Mingo twists around defensive backs that are in off – man quite a bit when he runs third level routes. His footwork remains consistent throughout the root, before and beyond the stem, allowing for him to maintain his speed and separate.
  • Good body control. Mingo is able to keep his 225 pound frame in proper positioning no matter what sort of route he runs, allowing for him to be in great positioning for the catch point.
  • Good long speed. Mingo is often criticized for having a lack of high level speed but a 4.46 40 at the combine is somewhat visible on tape as he burns players outside and in the slot, in press or off man coverages when running deep routes.

Weaknesses:

  • Adequate separation ability. Mingo is a technical route runner, but I wonder if he will be able to truly separate at the next level with his good but not great speed. His footwork isn’t crafted to the point where he can immediately separate off sharp cuts at the stem of his route, and usually wins these situations with contested catches.
  • Adequate YAC ability. Mingo doesn’t have track speed, and isn’t known for breaking tackles as a ball carrier. He lacks the athletic ability to be a twitchy separator as a ballcarrier at the next level, but with his frame he has the chance to power through opposing tacklers.
  • Adequate feel for zone coverage. Mingo needs to develop a better nuance and understanding for finding soft spots in zone coverages, as he looks to find ways to be open more often against zone looks.

Overall Assessment: Jonathan Mingo is an underrated, big bodied receiver who is good, not great, at many things but lacks any superstar level trait. Mingo is not the best athlete, and won’t be a YAC burner at the next level, but he does many things the right way, and is a technically sound, aggressive pass catcher who can help teams with inside outside versatility as a run blocker as well. Mingo will be a reliable receiver at the next level, and I think he has the toughness and strength, along with solid long speed to win as a deep ball threat on the outside as well.

Scheme Fit: Inside/outside versatile Z receiver
