Julius Brents
Pos: CB
School: Kansas State
Ht. 6’3”
Wt. 198
Games Watched: TCU, Missouri, Oklahoma
One Liner: Athletic corner who wins with frame, football IQ and functional strength
Strengths:
- Elite frame. Brents has a fantastic, 6’3 frame with solid muscle in his upper and lower body. He has 34 inch arms, a massive plus that allows him to be a physical and aggressive corner in man and zone looks.
- Very good football IQ. Brents shows great instincts in zone, and has a feel for the coverage, knowing where he has to be while maintaining great eye discipline on his half turns in Cover 3.
- Very good functional strength. Brents is a strong, aggressive corner who can plow through blocks in run support. He is a willing and successful wrap up tackler when he comes crashing down to stop the run. Against bigger body receivers, Brents has no issue with outmuscling at the catch point and being physical throughout the progression of the route.
- Very good zone technique. Brents checks off most boxes for a projectable zone corner at the next level. He has good eye discipline, a good recognition of route patterns, and has the juice to break on the ball after making his read.
Weaknesses:
- Adequate footwork. In press, Brents takes some unnecessary steps which prevents him from flipping his hips in time and transition. These false steps also result in Brents not being able to truly mirror receivers with proper leverage and positioning.
- Adequate long speed. Brents has adequate speed that may not be good enough in pure press situations. He may need safety help moving forward in the pros, or be a designated zone corner.
Overall Assessment: Julius Brents is a well built corner who has plus length to help him dominate at the catch point and derail receivers off their route progression. Brents has the potential to grow into a press corner, but for now he will do well as a Cover 2 and Cover 3 corner. His hips are fluid and allow him to work well on half turn concepts where he reads the QB with good eye discipline and changes direction to plant and go to break and disrupt the pass. Brents needs to improve the technicality of his motions, specifically his footwork as he drops back. With his speed, he may be limited moving forward but his toughness and functional strength make him an intriguing zone option moving forward.
Scheme Fit: Zone corner who can play press with safety help and improvement in footwork.
