Keion White
Pos: ED
School: Georgia Tech
Ht. 6’5″
Wt. 285
Games Watched: Clemson, Duke, North Carolina
One Liner: Athletic edge rusher who wins with short area quickness, functional strength and a powerful frame.
Strengths:
- Elite athletic ability. White is a freak athlete who has short area quickness and long speed of a linebacker. His speed will make you forget that he is 285 pounds, and his explosiveness and fluidity off the line is truly impressive for a player his size.
- Very good functional strength. White is a strong player who can, rawly, beat offensive lineman with some shock and power in his arms. White has a chiseled frame, top to bottom, which allows him to generate great leg drive to kick into a good first step and explosive get off from the LOS.
- Very good short area quickness. White has the quicks and lateral agility to be a threat to stunt and perform as a high level 1 gapper at the next level, and demonstrates penetration potential and flashes with his dominance over the B and C gap as a 3t and 5t.
- Good get off and first step. White kicks off the LOS into his rush and straight into the chest of opposing lineman with his 34 inch arms. His first step is good enough to allow his athleticism to take over and sheerly dominate opposing lineman with quicks and speed to penetrate.
Weaknesses:
- Marginal technique once engaged at the POA. White is an extremely raw prospect as of right now and doesn’t win at the POA with much technique at all, and uses wasted movements with his arms and legs(primarily athletic ability) to win and disengage off blocks.
- Marginal rush technique. White plays high at times with some poor pad level and leverage, and also lacks go to rush moves at this stage of his career. He needs to refine these aspects and add some nuance to his rush to be a considerable threat inside and outside at the next level
- Marginal play recognition. White transferred from Old Dominion as a tight end, and it is evident that he is still learning what is in front of him in the backfield, and developing an understanding of what to do based on certain blocking schemes and keys at the LOS. As of right now, White looks like he is trying to win his block rather than actually make a play.
Overall Assessment: Keion White is an extremely high upside prospect with elite athletic traits, strength, quickness and size to his name already. White however, lacks refinement and will truly need to improve his technique to be a consistent and formidable threat at the next level. He won’t be able to bully lineman the way he did in the ACC with sheer athletic ability, and will need to improve his pass rushing technique, how he disengages at the POA and develop instincts and a better feel for backfield keys and blocking schemes. However, these are correctable aspects to his game, but the traits are there, and he could be a dominant player if he even manages to correct some of these technical mistakes at the next level.
Scheme Fit: Penetrating, attack and react 5t who can reduce to 4i and 3t on late pass rushing downs.
Pick Projection: Top 50
Grade: 6.47
