Luke Musgrave
Pos: TE
School: Oregon State
Ht. 6’6″
Wt. 253
Games Watched: Boise State, Fresno State
One Liner: Big tight end who wins with size, reliable hands, and route running
Strengths:
- Very good size. Musgrave has great size measuring in at 6’6, and he uses this size well to make contested catches and make himself a towering redzone presence that is tough for corners to handle.
- Very good route running. Musgrave is a fluid route runner that moves extremely well for a player his size. He has solid salesmanship and can move smoothly in and out of his breaks at the stem of his route.
- Good hands. Musgrave has good hands and will be reliable making the catch when he has some cushion around him. He flashes 50/50 catches as well, but I would like to see more wins on Musgrave’s end considering his frame and catch radius.
- Good blocking technique. Musgrave flashes good blocking technique, and takes good angles in combo and zone blocking situations in space. This technique will need to be paired with NFL strength, but his willingness and angles that he takes as a blocker could make him more than just a receiving threat moving forward.
Weaknesses:
- Adequate strength. For his size, Musgrave doesn’t play with as much strength as you would like to see. In blocking situations he can get easily displaced by players on the defensive front, and he lacks the tenacity to really be a dominant blocker at this point.
- Adequate physicality. Musgrave needs to play stronger at the catch point to make catches in traffic. He lacks the physicality to consistently make the 50/50 catches that are desired out of a player with his size.
Overall Assessment: Luke Musgrave is a dangerous receiving tight end who possesses the size and route running to be a dominant threat in the passing game. His size creates sky high potential for 50/50 grabs and as a redzone target, and he has solid hands and blocking technique to go along with it. However, Musgrave will need to play more physically, in order to grab passes out of the air in congested situations with defenders around him. His injury also causes room for concern as we haven’t seen enough of Musgrave to know if he can make a consistent impact throughout a full season. Nonetheless, his receiving upside makes him a viable 2nd round target for teams in need of a pass catching tight end.
Scheme Fit: Y tight end that could become a reliable in-line blocker after filling out his frame
