Strengths: 

  • Very good blocker.Schoonmaker’s top selling point is his ability to block, with good strength and refined technique. He takes great angles into his blocks and keeps his hands active and with good placement and usage. 
  • Very good route runner. Schoonmaker is an underrated route runner, and displays the ability to find holes in the zone to settle in and can also be fluid enough to run shallow routes over the middle, incorporating some form of a release move in these routes as well to keep defenders guessing.
  • Good athleticism. Schoonmaker flashes some athleticism,  especially when he is running his routes, but I would like to see more of it when he has the ball in his hands and is looking to make a play. 

Weaknesses:

  • Adequate ball skills. Schoonmaker lacks the timing and physicality to really be competitive in 50/50 jumpball situations, and given his frame and prowess in the run game, he leaves a little more to be desired in the ball skills trait. 
  • Adequate hands. For his size, you’d expect Schoonmaker to be better at the catchpoint and more active with his hands, however he struggles in contested catch situations and needs to be more consistent to be more than just a blocking tight end. 

Overall Assessment: Luke Schoonmaker is going to be best utilized as a blocking tight end at the next level. He flashes some athleticism and fluidity as a route runner and sometimes shows good athletic traits in the process of winning his routes, but he leaves a lot to be desired after the catch and what he does when the ball is in the air. He will need to do a better job with body control and timing, as well as his strength to be physical at the catch point and make plays in traffic.
