Marvin Mims

Pos: WR

School: Oklahoma

Ht. 5’11″

Wt. 183

Games Watched: Nebraska, Kansas State, TCU

One Liner: Speedy wide receiver who wins with athleticism, YAC ability and reliable hands

Strengths:

  • Very good athleticism. Mims is a great athlete, who looks fluid from the release all the way to the catch point through his route. After the catch, Mims is a shifty, twitchy player who is hard to bring down. He is a slippery receiver who won’t go down with mere arm tackles.
  • Very good YAC ability. Because of Mims’ athleticism and shiftiness, he projects well as a YAC threat to make people miss in space. He plays with good contact balance and an aggressive desire to stay up and fight for extra yardage.
  • Very good footwork. Mims has good, disciplined footwork throughout his route that doesn’t include any wasted steps or movements. He has average salesmanship but his body control throughout the route allows for efficient movements and quick attacks to open holes against zone looks.
  • Very good toughness. Mims is on the smaller side, but his toughness is undeniable as he is seen going up and competing for 50/50 balls and fighting off defensive backs in the run game. He plays with great tenacity, and plays above his size consistently in order to outmuscle and win at catch points.
  • Good hands. Mims has soft hands in space and is usually a reliable receiver to haul the passes in, even when he has to contort his body in odd directions to reel passes in. However, he won’t be reliable enough to win contested 50/50 balls at the next level, due to size and strength issues.

Weaknesses:

  • Adequate size. Mims size isn’t bad per se, however it does show up on tape as an aspect that holds him back. He will struggle to go up and compete at the catch point sometimes due to his size, and his lack of bulk will make him a bit easier for defends to outposition and outmuscle, despite great toughness on Mims’ end.
  • Adequate strength. On top of some size concerns, Mims lacks the strength and muscle to really compete and be physical in tight coverage situations in man. He was good at avoiding contact in college at the release due to good footwork, but I wonder whether or not Mims will be able to avoid contact on the outside in a similar way.

Overall Assessment: Marvin Mims is a speedy receiver who has the YAC ability that teams are looking for in recent drafts. He is a shifty receiver who can make defenders miss with great contact balance and elusiveness in the open field. He is a disciplined route runner who shows off good, refined footwork, void of any wasted steps of movements. He has good body control and can adjust to passes in the air with good tracking ability as a deep ball threat. The size and strength will show up on tape at times and may prevent him from ever seeing true X or Z looks in the NFL, but with added bulk, Mims has enough versatility to line up as a boundary receiver.

Scheme Fit: Slot receiver that has outside versatility with added bulk

Pick Projection: Top 50
