Matthew Bergeron
Pos: OL
School: Syracuse
Ht. 6’5″
Wt. 322
Games Watched: Clemson, NC State, Notre Dame
One Liner: Athletic offensive lineman who wins with range, football IQ, and run blocking technique
Strengths:
- Elite athleticism. For a player his size, Bergeron moves with excellent speed and quickness. He bursts off the line and straight into the pads of opposing blockers on combo blocks and can fly upfield to the second level.
- Very good range. Bergeron is scheme versatile due to his lateral range and ability to find work upfield in the running game. He shows good foot speed and has the quickness to make it to backside blocks and second level linebackers to create holes in the running game.
- Very good run blocking technique. Bergeron plays with great run blocking technique. He plays with good positioning, whether it is a man or zone concept, and is able to sustain the block with great arm strength, and finally has the power and aggression to drive defenders back to seal off the block.
- Good football IQ. Bergeron shows the ability to pick up twists in time in the passing game and is patient in keeping his body square to prepare for stunting rushers off the edge.
Weaknesses:
- Adequate pass blocking technique. Bergeron will have to refine quite a bit about his passing game approach. His feet are often behind his upper body in his movements, preventing him from kicking off the line with good positioning against the edge rusher. In terms of his upper body, Bergeron is late to bring his arms up, causing edge’s to create first contact which allows for finesse moves and bullrushes. His hands also tend to wrap around the rusher, with a lack of good placement resulting in some bad beats as a pass blocker.
- Adequate awareness in space. While Bergeron can move up well in space and has the fluidity to find work, there are times where he loses track of the defenders in his area, and shows some below average awareness to find blockers to attack. This is an inconsistency rather than a repeated issue on tape.
- Adequate functional strength. Bergeron should look to add more upper body bulk and mass in order to be less susceptible to bull rushes at the next level. Rushers with good get offs have the chance to convert speed to power and really beat Bergeron forcing him to go back to bad hand placement and poor technique to save the play.
Overall Assessment: Matthew Bergeron is a highly athletic run blocking tackle who has the potential to play just about anywhere on the offensive line at the next level. He has a great frame and has solid arm length to combine with his plus athletic traits. Bergeron displays high level run blocking technique, and has the aggressiveness to be more than just a neutralizer at the next level. Bergeron has an extremely high upside, but will have to make some serious refinements to his pass blocking game in order to be a reliable tackle at the next level. With some more bulk to his frame, and passing game tweaks, Bergeron has the upside to be a high level, long term starter at the next level.
Scheme Fit: Scheme versatile right tackle that can play anywhere on the IOL and can kick out to left tackle with some more bulk and lower body strength
Pick Projection: Top 50
Grade: 6.47
