Michael Wilson

Pos: WR

School: Stanford

Ht. 6’2″

Games Watched: Washington, USC

One Liner: High motor wide receiver who wins with size, strength and ball skills.

Strengths:

  • Very good size. Wilson has really good, NFL caliber size to his name, and is able to win a lot of battles because of this. It gives him an advantage at the catch point and allows him to absorb tackles and maintain good contact balance after the catch.
  • Very good strength. Wilson uses his strength in 50/50 situations to make contested catches in traffic, but also uses his strength to be a very good blocker in the run game. Wilson can seal off boundaries and his assignment really effectively in the run.
  • Very good motor. Wilson plays with a ton of energy, whether it be looking to contribute in the ground game or looking to make a physical play deep downfield.
  • Good ball skills. Wilson flashes really good ball skills, with the ability to jump up with great body control and secure catches in traffic. Wilson’s frame would leave most desiring more from him in this category, but as of right now he doesn’t display his potential ball skills traits nearly as often or as high of a level as it should be.

Weaknesses:

  • Adequate route running. Wilson has average footwork, but he needs to improve his salesmanship in his routes, and will need to be sharper in and out of his breaks. Sometimes he wastes some steps in the beginning of his route as he enters the stem, which causes some delay and predictability on the other end.
  • Adequate athleticism. Wilson is far from a twitchy athlete, and doesn’t have the speed to be a pure separator at the next level. He lacks shiftiness and unpredictability at the stem of his routes or with the ball in his hands.
  • Adequate fluidity. Wilson is not a completely fluid mover, and I sense some stiffness as he runs routes.

Overall Assessment: Michael Wilson is a strong, high effort receiver, who’s route running looks like it is on the come up after a dominant Senior Bowl. He has great size for an X receiver and is a motivated run blocker that can seal off boundaries and weaker corners allowing the play to flow out to the sidelines. Wilson flashes good ball skills, and has pretty high upside here considering his size and strength. Wilson will need to continue working upon his route running so that he has a way to separate moving forward, as he has mostly modest athletic traits.

Scheme Fit: Round 4.

Pick Projection: Impact special teams player that could find his way up to a Z receiver role with improved route running.

Grade: 6.18
