O’Cyrus Torrence

Pos: IOL

School: Florida

Ht. 6’5″

Wt. 330

Games Watched: Georgia, LSU, Utah

One Liner: Squatty offensive lineman who plays with good functional strength, hand technique, and football IQ.

Strengths:

  • Very good functional strength. Torrence shows great strength on his early punches off the line. He has a squatty, old school man blocking build, that allows him to anchor well against pass rushers and drive against run blockers. He generates great power throughout his build, his modus operandi.
  • Very good hand technique. Torrence plays with great fundamentals and his hand placement allows his strength to create great knockback on opposing defensive lineman. His punches are almost always directed towards the right spot on the pads of rushers, and he brings his arms up with good timing to prevent other rushers from getting to his chest.
  • Very good football IQ. Torrence demonstrates high football IQ with his ability to fluidly and smoothly pick up stunts and twists in opposing rushes. Against Georgia’s vaunted front 7, Torrence showed great IQ with his ability to remain square and pick up stunts that entered A and B gaps.
  • Good range. Vertically, Torrence is actually a solid mover. He goes upfield in zone blocking situations with good timing and has the speed and quickness to find work at the next level. This wasn’t consistent on every down, but Torrence flashed some solid second level range.

Weaknesses:

  • Marginal mirroring. Torrence is not a fluid athlete, and his foot speed is lacking. He should not be relied on to mirror quick, twitchy rushers who play with great pacing. Torrence lacks the lateral agility to keep up with these type of defenders, and is much too stiff in the passing game to be relied on to block such defenders.
  • Adequate balance. To make up for his lack of mirroring, Torrence often lunges and overcommits to recover on lost reps. This was a frequent habit that Torrence had in college that resulted in easy beats. He’ll need to get rid of this bad habit in the pros in order to reduce lost plays on his end.
  • Adequate athleticism. Torrence’s size prevents him from being particularly fluid with great burst. He lacks the quickness to keep up with speedy rushers, and struggles to rotate and reapply his weight in space. This will put a cap on Torrence’s ceiling and abilities at the next level if he isn’t placed in a scheme to thrive.

Overall Assessment: O’Cyrus Torrence is a powerful, heavy guard that projects best as a run blocker in a man blocking scheme. He plays with great functional strength, and has great hand technique to keep players in front of him. Once engaged in contact, it is tough to escape Torrence’s grip with his strength and technique at the POA. However, Torrence is limited by a lack of athleticism, and stiffness that prevents lateral movements that will cause him to be late as a puller and struggle to work fluidly on the second level. Torrence has some bad habits with overcommitting and lunging to recover from beats in the passing game that he will need to correct at the next level. With better pass blocking discipline and balance, Torrence can become a solid man blocking guard at the next level.
