Quentin Johnston
Pos: WR
School: TCU
Ht. 6’3″
Wt. 208
Games Watched: Oklahoma State, Michigan, Kansas State
One Liner: Athletic wide receiver who wins with a massive catch radius, YAC ability, and a well built frame.
Strengths:
- Elite catch radius. With Johnston’s massive frame, he has the arm length and athleticism to make a play on just about any ball in the air. He can haul in underthrown balls with good body control and readjusments in the air.
- Very good YAC ability. Johnston is a shifty player, especially for his size, and has a go to spin move that he uses after hauling in a pass in the short areas to extend a play and add yardage downfield. Johnston has solid speed to get away from defenders and is a tough task to take down with his size.
- Very good frame. At 6’3, Johnston possesses ideal height and weight to be a boundary threat, and can outmuscle corners at the release point. He can undergo contact and maintain good positioning with his stout build.
- Good athleticism. Johnston has some twitch after the catch and works with solid speed in and out of his routes. He has good long speed for his size and has bursts with good short area quickness to make an impact with the ball in his hands.
Weaknesses:
- Marginal route running technique. Johnston lacks urgency or salesmanship in his route running and doesn’t make the sharp cuts needed to truly separate as a route runner. He has adequate footwork but doesn’t have sharp steps that would truly allow him to create room in the first and second levels of the field.
- Adequate catch in traffic. Although Johnston looks like a strong and defined receiver, he doesn’t always utilize his length and strength in contested catch situations. Even against smaller corners, it looks like he lacks the aggression to truly snatch the ball out of the air.
- Adequate hands. Johnston doesn’t have soft hands, and often makes simple drops, even outside of contested catch situations.
Overall Assessment: Quentin Johnston is a high upside prospect that carries some risk as a boom or bust prospect. He has an ideal frame and athleticism desired out of an NFL boundary corner, and has great traits. However, Johnston is far from a nuanced route runner, who lacks sharp footwork to separate as a technician. His hands also leave room for concern as he struggled in contested catch situations even as a big bodied receiver. If he can work upon some of these issues, or if placed in a limited route tree scheme as a pure deep ball threat, Johnston can be a successful player at the next level.
Scheme Fit: Z receiver for now who can elevate to a premium X by fixing drops and route running.
Pick Projection: Top 40
Grade: 6.42
