Roschon Johnson
Pos: RB
School: Texas
Ht. 6’0″
Wt. 219
Games Watched: Alabama, TCU, Texas Tech
One Liner: Power running back who wins with strength, size, and explosiveness.
Strengths:
- Very good strength. Johnson plays with really good strength and power right off the mesh point. He attacks his gaps with force and lowers his shoulder which works out extremely effectively for him.
- Very good size. Johnson has great size, and has a frame that is tough to bring down. He can absorb blows and keep moving forward, churning and gaining extra yardage after contact.
- Very good pass blocker. Because of his size and strength, Johnson’s traits make him a great pass blocker and demonstrates the ability to pick up and fight the blitz at a high level, probably amongst the highest in this class.
- Good explosiveness. Johnson flashes some explosiveness, however this is mainly only seen in gap scheme situations where the hole is predetermined for him to attack.
Weaknesses:
- Adequate change of direction. Johnson is not going to be able to quickly change directions, and cut into different holes with quickness. He is not a zone runner and will not be able to make these cuts in time.
- Adequate processing. Johnson is an adequate processor of zone holes opening up, and could be a tick late to actually attack these holes.
- Adequate speed. Johnson plays a little bit slower than ideal, and even when he is charged up with explosiveness into his gap, his top speed looks just about average.
Overall Assessment: Roschon Johnson is a high motor prospect who backed up an insane prospect in Bijan Robinson. Johnson provides some solid skills to the table, particularly his strength, size and willingness to block in blitz situations. He is a powerful runner, unafraid to lower his shoulder, and shows the ability to fight for extra yardage as a result. Johnson will be limited however, as he won’t thrive in a zone scheme due to adequate fluidity to change directions and cut back into different holes. Johnson’s processing speed isn’t the best as of right now, so it would be best for him to start out in zone scheme before he develops other nuances of his game.
