School: TCU
Ht. 6’3″
Wt. 332
Games Watched: Michigan, Oklahoma State, Texas
One Liner: Versatile interior offensive lineman who wins with strength, size, and footwork
Strengths:
- Very good strength. Avila has the power and tenacity to be a firm neutralizer at the next level. He has great arm strength and has the core power to sustain blocks and contain finesse moves outside of his radius.
- Very good size. Avila has ideal size that allows him to be a wide body that makes things tougher for finesse defenders to wrap around his hips and utilize inside counters. He possesses the desired frame for interior offensive lineman in gap schemes.
- Very good footwork. Avila generates good to above average leg drive consistently on run plays and has the necessary footwork to be a pulling lineman in a man scheme. He has the lateral agility to recover and reposition himself to be square with the rusher.
- Good athleticism. Avila is a solid athlete, and considering his size he moves somewhat well in space. He has decent range looking for work in space and has the functional athleticism to react quick enough to rush counters by defenders.
Weaknesses:
- Adequate technique. Avila’s hand movements and usage are lacking, and oftentimes seem delayed. His placement could use some work, but he will need some technical fixes in his upper body in order to consistently protect against handsy rushers from the interior.
- Adequate football IQ. Avila can be late to pick up stunts and twists and needs to keep his head on a swivel at all times. This will come with experience but as of right now, he will need to be coached up to be less susceptible to twists up front.
Overall Assessment: Steve Avila is an old school, man blocking guard who has the power and frmae to be a dominant interior offensive lineman in the right scheme. He has the above average functional strength, size and footwork to be a good run blocker and has the upside to develop as a pass protector as well. Avila will need to work on his hand technique and consistently work to refine his ability to pick up twists and stunts to become a formidable pass blocker at the next level.
Scheme Fit: Man blocking guard until he corrects some upper body technique issues
Pick Projection: Round 2
Grade: 6.35
