Tanner McKee
Pos: QB
School: Stanford
Ht. 6’6″
Wt. 231
Games Watched: Washington, USC, Tennessee
One Liner: Prototypical quarterback who wins with arm talent, size, and first level accuracy
Strengths:
- Elite size. Tanner Mckee possesses the ideal, old school size desired out of quarterbacks prospects. As a result of his size he brings great field vision and has the ability to stand tall, calm and composed in the pocket when given the opportunity.
- Very good arm talent. McKee has solid arm talent, and can add some zip on his throws with high velocity. He has the arm strength to make deep downfield throws as well.
- Good first level accuracy. McKee’s accuracy is mostly safe on first level throws and he usually hits the mark when throwing between the LOS and the first down marker.
Weaknesses:
- Adequate ball placement downfield. McKee’s ball placement outside of the short areas causes questions and make you wonder if he can really put his arm strength to use.
- Marginal mobility. McKee is far from an above average athlete, and will not win when rolling out of the pocket or attempting to evade pressure in an effort to make athletic plays. He lacks the mobility to truly step up in the pocket and make some plays happen with his legs.
- Adequate mechanics. McKee’s mechanics are also unorthodox, with an odd throwing motion that could be the primary reason for pure accuracy. However, I wonder how much this motion can be fixed in this stage of McKee’s career.
Overall Assessment: Tanner McKee possesses most of the tools to be an ideal, old school gunslinging type pocket passer. He has a nice arm that has the capability of throwing deep downfield and hit players with high speed throws, and has the size that offensive coordinators would have dreamed of back in the day. However, McKee didn’t capitalize on these traits nearly as much as he could have, and was held back by some poor mechanics and below average accuracy. In the modern day NFL, McKee’s old school build may not be suitable unless he plays behind a stellar offensive line.
