One Liner: Undersized nickel corner who can with athleticism, toughness, and tackling.

Strengths:

  • Very good athleticism. Tomlinson plays with great athletic ability, and shows high level short area quickness with good bursts in and out of his breaks. Speed and change of direction are not issues at all with his playing style, and he is an explosive player that can attack from all angles.
  • Very good toughness. Tomlinson is a physical, tough cornerback who plays with great confidence and desire to make a play, whether it be in the run game or stopping a receiver in his tracks. Despite his size, he goes up and competes for passes at the catch point and is physical enough to impact the play.
  • Very good hip movements. Tomlinson is a fluid hip mover, an important checkbox for a player to have considering his size. He looks smooth going out of press and into his transitions, and can play off man as well as he knows when to open up his hips. There are times where he may overcommit to a route, flipping at a much larger angle, but this can be controlled and taught properly at the next level.
  • Good technique. Tomlinson plays with good technique for the most part, and apart from the hip tendency mentioned above, he displays solid footwork and body positioning throughout the route to possess average to above average technique.

Weaknesses:

  • Poor size. Obviously, size will hold Tomlinson back and will restrict him to being an inside slot corner. Even in these situations, I worry whether or not his toughness and physicality can really outweigh situations where he plays against bigger slots who have wider frames and stronger hands.
  • Adequate discipline. Tomlinson often times overcopmensates for his lack of size with aggrsesive and unnecessary physicality which does lead to flags. He will need to be more disciplined while maintaining his physical play style moving forward.

Overall Assessment: Tre’Vius Hodges-Tomlinson is an undersized corner who could find a home as a slot corner in the pros. His size is concerning, but he played on the boundary in college, indicating that he has at least average strength to play some press snaps in the pros. However, he should definitely start off in the slot where he can take advantage of his physical and explosive playstyle. His athleticism and competitive toughness make him a dream special teams contributor and a guy who can fight for his spot as a slot corner.
